Anyone who visits San Sebastian knows that one of its main attractions, apart from its gastronomy, are its beaches, with La Concha beach being the undisputed star, due to its incomparable setting.

But what not everyone knows is that Zurriola beach, also known as Gros beach by the locals (as it is located in the neighbourhood of the same name), is the favourite beach for surfers and young people.
In fact, there is an area of this neighbourhood, Sagües, that breathes surfing atmosphere from every corner. From its themed clothing shops to those offering services for surfers, everything in this area of the neighbourhood is ideal for lovers of this water sport.
Today we want to tell you about it, its characteristics and, in short, everything you need to know to enjoy it to the full, whether you’re a surfer or not.
Location
Zurriola Beach is strategically located to the east of the Urumea River, in the Gros neighbourhood, just a few minutes’ walk from the Old Town of San Sebastian.
This proximity to the centre makes it easily accessible for locals and tourists alike. Furthermore, its location next to the Kursaal Conference Centre and surrounded by bars, restaurants and shops, makes it one of the most dynamic and attractive areas of the city.
For visitors to San Sebastian, getting to Zurriola is easy. If you are coming from the Old Town, you can cross the river over the Zurriola Bridge (also known as the Kursaal Bridge) and, in just a few minutes, you will be in front of the sea.
The beach is also well connected by public transport, because you can get there both by bus from the different neighbourhoods of the city, and by Renfe suburban train, if you are not staying in Donostia.
But if you prefer walking or cycling, this beach is also perfect for that, regardless of the accommodation you have chosen. Just think that, from one end of Donostia to the other, it takes about 1 hour to walk. So that’s the maximum distance you’ll have if you’re coming from the furthest neighbourhood.
Characteristics of the beach
Now that you know where the beach is, how to get there and what the surroundings are like, let us tell you about the characteristics of Zurriola beach.
Waves for all levels
La Zurriola is known for its waves, which attract surfers from all over the world. Unlike the calm waters of La Concha, the waves here are bigger and more constant, ideal for water sports such as surfing and bodyboarding.
Both beginners and experienced surfers find Zurriola the perfect place to enjoy the sea. However, it is important to be aware of the water conditions and currents, especially for those who are not familiar with this type of waves. It is therefore not recommended to move too much in the direction of the rocks, as there may be changes in the currents.
If you are just starting out, the most recommendable area is the one behind the Kursaal, as the waves are smaller and the area is quieter. On the other hand, for more experienced surfers, the Sagüés area is the most suitable.
Fine sand and ample space
Almost 800 metres long, Zurriola offers an extensive stretch of sand, perfect for those looking to sunbathe, relax or enjoy outdoor activities such as volleyball, among others.
In fact, its spaciousness is one of the points that people like most about this beach, because, unlike the other two beaches, here it is ensured that there is always enough space, even on the busiest days of the summer.
In terms of atmosphere, it is a beach that is frequented by many young people looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, especially in the afternoon or late in the day.
