We tell you everything you need to know about the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Coro, after which you will only think about discovering this idyllic place in person.
History of the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Coro
This basilica was built around 1740, but it was actually built using elements from an old Romanesque church located on the same site. The floors and various architectural elements were salvaged from this church. This is why many consider the Basilica de Nuestra Señora del Coro to be the oldest in the city, as they start counting from when the first church was built in the 12th century.
The Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Coro follows a baroque style that incorporates neoclassical, churrigueresque and gothic elements. This combination makes it a unique place, which is why it attracts so many tourists every day. Its beauty is unequalled, on its exterior we can see the figure of San Sebastian located between the two towers and papal symbols thanks to which it has obtained the symbol of minor basilica.
On the other hand, inside there is a large hall divided into three naves. Its walls, which end up forming a vault, reach a height of 15 metres on the sides and a central vault that reaches a height of 27 metres.
On the main altar we find the patron saint of the city, next to San Sebastián, the Virgen del Coro. A sculpture of 40 centimetres of wood with all the sculpted details transmitting an expression of sweetness in her soft face.
San Sebastián, the other patron saint of the city, is represented in a sculpture on the outside of the basilica, as mentioned above, and on a canvas on the main altar, created by Luis Boccia in 1819.
